What does your job involve?
Reporting on oncology news, interviewing researchers
How did you get to this job (education etc.)?
After a biology degree, I realised I was having much more fun chatting about my research than doing it , so I sought out a Science Communication MSc. After this and a few years working in a local science centre, a friend let me know their company was hiring, and then they hired me.
Do you feel being LGBT has affected your career decisions?
No, but Bristol has been a great place to be employed and openly queer. That said, my job sends me to some interesting places, and during assignments in Egypt and Russia, being straight-passing has been advantageous.
Have you had any reactions from colleagues about being LGBT, either good or bad?
None I’ve noticed, and I’ve not been the only openly bi employee .
Did you have any role models growing up (LGBT, STEM, totally unrelated…)?
Robb Flynn of heavy metal band MachineHead
What are your plans for the future?
Get a better paying job, marry my fiancé, turn my SciComm podcasts into live events, get involved in local politics
Anything else you’d like to add?
SciComm is essential part of STEM – if you’re not already involved in some thing, give it a go!
